A Community Partnership Making a Weekly Difference

Our collaboration with FOCUS Center for Autism in Canton, CT creates meaningful, real-world opportunities for young adults with autism to build skills, confidence, and connection through service. As Delivery Angels and partners in seasonal farm pickups, FOCUS participants play an active role in our Healthy Meals Program while growing independence and pride, as shared by Adam Cohen, Program Director at FOCUS and a Healing Meals Delivery Angel:

“FOCUS Supportive Housing programs serve young adults 18 and older with an autism diagnosis. The young adult programs provide supportive living opportunities that encourage residents to develop and openly discuss personal goals and interests. While working alongside FOCUS staff, a collaborative effort is implemented to help residents work towards actualizing these goals. FOCUS encourages each resident to develop the skills needed to live as independently as possible, to become responsible members of the community, and to create a meaningful life.

“One key factor in achieving independence and a fulfilling life is work. For some, the journey to competitive employment begins with volunteering. Volunteering not only builds important job skills but also provides the rewarding experience of helping others.

“This is where Healing Meals comes in. The young adults in the FOCUS program take on the role of Delivery Angels, providing home deliveries that involve real-life social interactions and a sense of accomplishment. Additionally, FOCUS staff and young adults help with the in-season vegetable pick-up from Holcomb Farm, delivering fresh produce to the Healing Meals kitchen. Both of these roles provide essential training in accountability, respect, and good manners. Ultimately, all FOCUS Delivery Angels take great pride in representing both the FOCUS and Healing Meals communities!”
